Weeks ago I ordered the rather lovely Illustrated Faith "Heart that Receives" bible journal kit from Ellie Beth Designs.
I was following the devotional for a while, doing a few bible-art-journaling, but then my church began a short series of 1 John and I studied this quite deeply and instead I used parts of the kit - plus some Illustrated Faith "Fruit Punch" alpha stickers for this.
My church is currently doing a series in Matthew and this week's teaching was surrounding the three accounts of healing at the beginning of Matthew 8.
I was inspired by bible journaling process videos I have been watching to do a journal using elements from the "Heart that Receives" kit which I thought would fit quite well with my notes.

Colours: Primary Red, Cadmium Orange Hue, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalocyanine Green, Titanium White |
So to start with, I picked some colours from my Liquitex Basics acrylic paint set and added the white because these colours can be quite intense. I had an idea to put three "sets" of these colours on my page.
|
A rather decimated set of stickers |
Here is what is left of the alphas and stickers from the kit.
|
StazOn Ink in Jet Black - works great over acrylic and is a permanent water-resistant ink |
I used the stamps from the kit that read yes, Lord and Receive
|
Cut-outs and stickers |
I tend to start with putting my ideas on a piece of clear acetate so I can figure out if it will fit or if in fact I like it. I cut out the receive tab from the card of cut-outs (stamp backer) as well as punching out the centre of the main cover of the card that has the title in that beautiful script.
|
A hole where the title once was! |
So normally, I prep the page with clear gesso, but this was fairly spur of the moment so I simply took a couple of wet-wipes, squirted my paints onto a plastic party plate that I found in the cupboard and made a few swipes.
I use the Inspire journaling/colouring bible for my journaling and there was a colour-in verse on one side which I didn't want to use so I covered it with the white acrylic and laid my main feature over it - I'd decided at this point that I would journal on the lined side.
|
Covering the left side of the page as this had the colour-in verse on it |
I spontaneously decided to paint three abstract flowers on the page for no real reason - I just liked the idea of using them a bit like bullet points. I left them to dry overnight because I did this before going out to the cinema!
|
Decided to do this as a double page as it covered a large part of Matthew 8 |
|
A close up of the colour "sets" |
|
Stamped the yes, Lord and Receive at the top and bottom |
I'd already decided what I wanted to put on the page, as I'd wanted to pick out some specific points. I couldn't put Will, Love, Faith all on the page (mainly because I have run out of the letter E) so realising that the heart and plus sign were a great pairing I put these on instead. To finish off, I added the Receive tab on top of the page, and had this banner sticker with the same kind of print which I added behind the tab on the previous page which has Matthew 7 on, which talks about receiving so I thought it was quite appropriate here too.
|
Matthew 7: Ask, Seek, Knock - receiving |
|
Finally journaling notes |
I still wanted to use the Heart that Receives title circle I punched out and decided to put it onto the right hand side, covering up the top set of colours, I journaled on the rest of this side.
So that's it. Spontaneous bible-art-journaling from doing a study in Matthew 8
